Monday, November 2, Five Minds for the Future
Parent Discussion Groups
1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Winnetka Community House, Rooms

Join with parents from New Trier Township for lively facilitated discussion
groups following Howard Gardner’s Oct. 29 evening presentation. Parents will be
divided into groups based upon age of child(ren) -- elementary, middle and high
school – and the 3 groups will meet simultaneously in different rooms. Each
discussion group will be facilitated by a well-known Township educators,
including New Trier High School Assistant Superintendent Paul Sally, NTHS
Social Work Dept. Chair Tom Golebiewski, Ph.D., Wilmette Junior High School
Principal Dave Palzet, Ph.D., District 38 Superintendent (Kenilworth) Kelley
Kalinich, Ed.D., District 39 (Wilmette) Central School Assistant Principal
Rebecca Littmann, and District 36 (Winnetka) Crow Island School Principal
Deirdre Churchill, M.A.. Dr. Gardner has graciously agreed to provide a few
“activating” questions or observations for each group to consider and discuss.
This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to engage in a dialogue with each
other, with expert guidance. What’s not to like? 2 separate sessions, one at
1:00 PM and one at 7:00 PM, to accommodate all parent schedules. Attendance will
be capped, and reservations will be necessary, so don’t wait until the last
minute to sign up.

 Howard
Gardner, Ph.D., Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard
Graduate School of Education, is best known in educational circles for his
theory of multiple intelligences, a critique of the notion that there exists but
a single human intelligence that can be assessed by standard psychometric
instruments.
In his most recent book, Five Minds for the Future, Dr. Gardner adopts the
stance of policy maker, and proposes five minds that need to be cultivated in
students, employees and managers in order to be successful in the future. The
five minds are the Disciplined Mind, the Creative Mind, the Synthesizing Mind,
the Respectful Mind and the Ethical Mind. While not exclusive to the 21st
century, each of these minds is at a premium today, and the development and
enhancement of them should not be considered optional.
Dr. Gardner is the Senior Director of Harvard Project Zero, and among
numerous honors, he received a MacArthur Prize Fellowship in 1981. Since
the middle 1990s, in collaboration with psychologists Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi,
Ph.D., and William Damon, Ph.D., (coming Feb. 23, 2010, sponsored by
FAN and the Glencoe PTO), Dr. Gardner has directed the
GoodWork Project—a
study of work that is excellent, engaging, and ethical. Considered one of the
most influential public intellectuals today, Dr. Gardner’s urgent message will
resonate with students, parents, educators and business professionals alike.
