An Early Game Plan to Prevent Teenage Drug & Alcohol Abuse

Wednesday, March 19, 2003 12:45 to 2:30 p.m.

New Trier High School
Northfield Campus, Building C, Room 234

Local author Colleen Strenning will discuss her book, A Game Plan for Parents: Preparing Your Child for the Teenage Scene. The program is a primer on prevention skills for parents of younger children to help steer them on a path of healthy physical, intellectual and emotional development and reduce the chances that they will abuse drugs & alcohol in their teens. The "Game Plan" is made up of 5 strategies:

  • Thinking like a child
  • Modeling Behavior
  • Becoming an Informed Parent
  • Having an Expectation of Nonuse
  • Communicating Effectively

According to Ms. Strenning, parents should start to formulate their family’s "Game Plan" while children are in elementary and middle school.
