Youth Safety on a Living InternetTuesday, October 5, 7:00-8:30 PM
Journalist and youth advocate Anne Collier, MA will talk about this new context for parenting, teaching, and working with young people, and will give an overview of what the emerging bodies of youth-online-risk and social-media research are really revealing, free of hyperbole. Collier is the Founder and Executive Director of Net Family News, Inc. (since 1999), and editor of NetFamilyNews.org. She co-directs ConnectSafely.org, a Web-based interactive forum and information site for teens, parents, educators and everybody interested in the impact of the social Web on youth, and vice versa. Collier serves as co-chair of the Obama administration’s Online Safety & Technology Working Group, which submitted its final report (PDF) to Congress in June 2010. Members worked with federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, and Department of Education, to evaluate industry efforts and to make recommendations to promote online safety for children through education, labeling, and parental control technology. This will NOT be your typical Internet-info program! CPDUs available for education professionals.
